Development of a mathematical model for the propagation of flood waves along the serbian stretch of the Danube river
MIKE11 software was used to develop a hydrodinamic model for the propagation of flood waves along the Serbian section of the Danube River (from the state border with Hungary at km 1433 to the Smederevo town at km 1116). The model was developed within a scientific project “Development of a Mathematical Model for the Propagation of Flood Waves along the Serbian Stretch of the Danube River”, financed by the Serbian Ministry of Science and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management – the Republic Directorate for Water. The model has been primarily developed for unsteady simulation of flood waves. River-winterbed was modelled as a system of several parallel branches (low flow channel and branches along larger floodplains). The river channel has been defined in the model making use of over 300 cross sections of the river bed - surveyed in 2004 - at approximately 1 km distance. Due to a lack of DEM, the geometry of floodplains was defined by using topographical maps of scale 1:25000. Model calibration was based on a 2006 hydrological dataset and verified against a 2005 hydrological dataset. This paper presents a detailed description of the model development process, shows results of the calibration and verification processes, gives some results of simulation of the extreme hydrological scenarios, and it outlines possible future uses of the developed model.
